Jily- Amortentia and Felix Felicis
“Wake up,Lily.”Mary lifted the curtains around Lily’s four-poster,letting the light from the tip of her wand seep through the velvet red.
“What?”Lily yawned and opened her eyes sleepily,“What time is it?”
“2 o’clock in the morning.”Mary answered excitedly,“Let’s go.”
“Go where?”Lily wondered, until she remembered the conversation last night.
Professor Slughorn showed the N.E.W.T. students four kinds of potion-Veritaserum,Polyjuice Potion,Felix Felicis and Amortentia during the previous class. Slughorn awarded a tiny bottle of Felix to the best Draught of Living-Death brewer, which, unfortunately, wasn’t Lily. Severus,no,he’s Snape now, made the best potion, the color unnaturally pale, almost clear. How on earth did he do that? Lily thought,I’ve stirred the potion so many times that my wrist was aching, but still it only reached the level of pink. “Oh,forget it.”she murmured to herself,“I don’t care what Snape has done.”
But the point is,Mary wanted to get a bit of the love potion. She whispered to Lily excitedly after class,“Why don’t we brew a bit of Amortentia?”
“What?! You know that love potions can’t create real love, don’t you? There can be horrible consequences!”seeing the hurt look on Mary’s face,Lily added hastily,“Besides, who can possibly refuse our charming Mary?”
“Oh,that’s sweet. But Lily,I just want to get some perfume.”
“What, perfume?”Lily was shocked by Mary’s respond.
“Yeah, perfume.”Mary confirmed,“Isn’t it said that Amortentia produces the smell that attract you the most? Then what if I use it as perfume. Won’t everybody love it?”
“Err…you sure this is a good idea?”
“C’mon,it’s not like I will give it to anyone. Also, you can improve your potion skill during the process.”Mary pleaded, egging Lily to try.
“Alright then, let’s try to brew you some.”Lily finally agreed.
“Yeah! You’re the best,Lily!”
“But remember,no enchanting anyone to fall in love with you.”
However, something had to go wrong. The potion looked alright-mother-of-pearl sheen, spiral steam-but it didn’t smell right. Lily smelled parchment, ink, sunshine, lily flower-all great, until she discovered a smell that isn’t quite pleasant at all-a combination of grass and mud and sweat, like what the Quidditch players may smell like after a hard match. But she hardly knew any Quidditch player very well. The only one she was familiar with was that Potter,“I’m definitely not attracted to him.”she argued. So in the end, even though Mary found nothing wrong with the potion, they decided to smuggle some from the dungeon,“I’ve got to find out what’s wrong with it.”Lily said determinedly.
So here they were, awake at the dead of the night,on the way to break some school rules.
“Hey,Lily! Are you still with me?”Mary asked, pulling her back to reality.
“Yeah,I’m alright. Just a bit tired.”
“Alright then,let’s go.”
With a well-placed Disillusionment Charm on themselves, the girls set off to wander. After nearly stepping on Mrs. Norris’s tail and meeting Peeves in an empty classroom, they finally reached the dungeon.
“Quick,”Mary said,“I think someone is near.”
“Alright, don’t panic. We’ve got camouflage now.”Lily reassured her.
Mary suddenly whispered,“Wait, have you brought a bottle or something? I’ve completely forgotten about those.”
“Nah,I’ve got it covered.”Lily said as she produced a flask out of thin air, filling it with the mysterious liquid in the cauldron. She hid the tiny tube in her palm, and was just about to walk out of the room with Mary when somebody appeared out of nowhere.
Lily’s shoulder tensed. She carefully pulled Mary aside with her,and regarded the newcomer closely. Long black hair, lean and muscular, something seemed familiar, but Lily can’t really recognize him in the dim light.
But then he talked, and everything was clear. He said,“Prongs, all cleared.”And immediately Lily wanted to get away-it was Sirius Black. Which meant that Potter was nearby.
“Let’s go.”she mouthed, but Mary pulled her back. Her intention was clear,“Let’s see what they’re up to.”So the girls stayed, watching the Marauders appearing one by one.
“I told you it was nothing.”Sirius said to James,“Probably just a mouse.”
“No,Padfoot,I knew somebody was near.”James said a bit anxiously.
“Whoever they are, they haven’t bothered to show themselves yet.”Remus Lupin told them,“Just go and get what you want.”
Peter Pettigrew stumbled forward, nearly knocking over a row of potion materials. “You can really do with some Felix,Wormtail.”Sirius joked,“Or would you need some Befuddlement Draught antidote?”
“Alright then,I’ve got the potion. Now,let’s go.”James said, clutching a vial of golden liquid in his hand.
So the Marauders disappeared, leaving the girls shocked.
“How did they disappear? And what have they taken?”Mary whispered.
“I don’t know,but we’d better get out of here now.”Lily whispered back.
The next day, things became even odder. Lily smelled the love potion they took from the dungeon, but got the Quidditch smell again. “What the heck is going on?”Lily murmured while examining the flask of Amortentia, comparing it to the bottle she has brewed herself,“They are exactly the same!”
Lily couldn’t focus on anything that day. She wandered from classroom to classroom, going to all her lessons, but not taking in anything the teacher said,as if in a trance. What’s more, she kept stealing nervous glances at the Quidditch field, and for a few times, even at Potter!
“Something must be wrong with her,”Mary thought,“How can I get her back to normal?”Suddenly, she had a great idea.
When Lily wandered to the library,Mary stopped her just in time,“Let’s go to the Quidditch field today.”
“What?”Lily asked, but still a bit confused and distant, not as shocked as she should be,“But the homework…”
“The essays can wait.”Mary cut her off,“But you’re definitely not well today. Maybe the clean air and sunshine in the Quidditch field can help. Besides,we might be able to figure out your secret crush.”
“Shut up,Mary! I don’t have a crush on anyone.”Lily argued embarrassedly.
“Well, let’s go and find out.”Mary said happily as she sprinted towards the Quidditch field, dragging Lily along.
When they finally reached the Quidditch field, both of they were tired and sweaty. They picked a seat in the stadium, watching the grass rippling in the wind. “Thank you,Mary. I do think I’m feeling better now.”Lily was just beginning to talk when the Gryffindor Quidditch team came in.
“Hello,Lily!”James smiled ear-to-ear when he saw Lily sitting on a bench,“You came to see how well I play, didn’t you?”
“Shut up,Potter!”Lily snapped back, her relaxing moment completely ruined by his appearance,“Mary, let’s go.”
“Wait a second, let me catch my breath.”Mary muttered.
So the girls sat in the stadium, and watched the Gryffindor team train. All the members were great flyers, but James seemed to fly especially well. Well, well wasn’t exactly the word. The Quidditch captain flew like an eagle in the wind, graceful, light, yet completely in control,as if the broom is a part of his body, responding to his thought.
“Wow!”Mary gasped as James made an impossible shot,“He has skill.”
“Nah,he’s just lucky.”Lily responded, but also quite impressed in the inside.
“Nobody can be this lucky.”Mary said when James scored another goal,“He would have to drink liquid luck to do this.”
“Oh right, liquid luck!”Lily exclaimed, suddenly struck by an idea,“Mary, you’re so clever!”
“What?”Mary asked, completely mystified by the sudden compliment,“What do you mean?”
“I mean Potter must have taken Felix Felicis from the dungeon. That why he can play so well.”Lily said excitedly,“I’ll interrogate him after the training session.”
“But why would he do that?”Mary asked,“Today is just an ordinary day. Why would he drink Felix?”
“I definitely don’t understand how Potter thinks.”Lily snapped.
After the training ended,James rushed towards Lily,“You see how well I fly?”he asked, like a kid pleading for an approval.
“Not too bad,I suppose.”Lily answered coldly,“You must have done something forbidden to be that lucky.”
But James was over the moon when he heard the first sentence, taken it as a compliment, and completely missed what Lily said afterwards,“Then will you go out with me? There’s a Hogsmeade weekend tomorrow.”
“N…”just as Lily began to refuse, that smell caught her breath, that Quidditch player smell again. It clouded her mind, made her nervous with no apparent reason, and let her say an answer different from all the others.
“Alright then,Potter,”she found herself saying,“I’ll meet you in the common room at 9.”
“What?!”James asked,as if he couldn’t believe his ears,“You…you will?”
“Yes,Potter. Unless you want to take back that offer?”Lily replied, trying to keep her cool, but actually also quite surprised in the inside by what she has just said.
“Yeah!!!”James ran back joyfully, waving his arms like a three-year-old who has got his birthday gift,“She said yes,she said yes!”
“What a fool.”Lily murmured, not realizing that she now, too, had a faint smile on her lips.
“I know you had a crush on somebody!”Mary exclaimed,“But I didn’t know that it is Potter.”
“No,I don’t like him.”Lily snapped back embarrassedly,“It’s all because that stupid Felix.”
Or is it? Lily searched herself for reasons to agree, but failed. The true answer would be no. Ever since he became not so much a showoff,Lily can’t really help to be attracted to him. His smile, his jokes, even the way his ears redden when embarrassed,Lily found them cute. After the incident with Snape, she started to realize that she might really be more attached to Potter than she thought, falling for him bit by bit. And these days, every time he asked Lily out,a tiny part of her wanted to agree-why don’t you give him a chance? That part of her would always say. She knew that was only fair, but she kept resisting-no,he’s a complete moron,I definitely don’t like him. And this time, along with Felix, and the smell of the love potion, the temptation was too strong, that she finally faced herself.
But during the rest of the day,she kept questioning herself,“Did I agree to him intentionally,or is it just because the effect of Felix?”“If I was pushed by Felix, does it still means I truly like Potter?”With these questions circling in her mind,Lily drifted off into an uneasy sleep.
Finally, the next day came. She got up early, dressed herself in her usual clothes,“I don’t want to make a fuss and boost Potter’s ego.”she told Mary, but combed her hair a bit more carefully, and used a tiny bit make-up.
“Wow,Lily, you’re beautiful!”Mary exclaimed when she saw her,“You are going to drive Potter crazy.”
“Shut up!”Lily said,her cheeks reddened.
So she went out to have a quick breakfast, and met James in the common room. “He does seem more matured.”Lily noted to herself.
Indeed,he did. James wore a new pair of sneakers, his hair newly combed and school robes freshly laundered. He smiled nervously at Lily,“You ready?”
“Yes,”she answered, and was then lead out of the portrait hole by James, lead into the wonderful day of the Magical World.
They had a great time in Hogsmeade, wandering through the streets of the wizarding street. They went to Three Broomsticks, drinking the wonderful Butterbeer and chatting. They enjoyed themselves in Honeydukes, eating as much chocolate as they can. Finally, they went to Zonko’s,pulling jokes on each other with the magic items. Lily hasn’t felt this happy for a long time, maybe not ever since she found out that she’s a witch Hogwarts. “It’s all because the Felix he has taken,”Lily reminded herself,“Everything today is based on a potion. I will interrogate him after it wears off.”
Finally, before they part,James pulled Lily aside,“A little gift.”he told her with a nervous smile on his face.
Curiously,Lily opened the gift box. Inside sat the cutest teddy bear she has ever seen, and in its hands, was…a heart-shaped vial of Felix Felicis!
“What! You haven’t take the Felix?”Lily asked, shocked and surprised.
“No,of course not.”James answered,“Wait a second,how do you know that I’ve got Felix?”
“Never mind.”Lily said hastily,“So you haven’t drunk anything for the whole day?”
“No. Well, maybe except that wonderful Butterbeer in Three Broomsticks.”James responded,“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,I just thought you must have taken Felix,or else I wouldn’t…”Lily suddenly found her thought a bit harsh and caught herself just in time,“You really have improved a lot these years,James.”
“Of course,my lady. I’ll do anything for you. And about the Felix…”his ears suddenly reddened as he mumbled something about “luckiest man”that Lily didn’t catch.
“So,what were you saying at that time?”Years later, when watching Harry playing with the teddy bear,Mrs. Potter asked her husband.
“I was saying, that I don’t need any more luck. I’m already the luckiest man on Earth,”James answered with a sweet smile on his lips,“just because I’ve met you.”
